Woo Soo Kim
Woo Soo Kim (born March 1, 1978) is a Korean-Canadian Engineer and Professor at Simon Fraser University (SFU).[1] He is the Director of the Global Institute for Agritech and a leading researcher in the fields of 3D-printed electronics, physical AI, and agricultural technology (agritech).[2][3][4]
Early life and education
Professor Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea. He attended Yonsei University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 2001. He completed his graduate studies at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), receiving an MSc in 2003 and a PhD in Material Engineering in 2006 under the supervision of Professor Byeong-Soo Bae[5]
From 2006 to 2008, He was a postdoctoral research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), supervised by Professor Edwin L. Thomas.[6]
Career & Research
Following his post-doctoral work, He worked as a Senior Research Scientist at the Xerox Research Centre of Canada (XRCC) for two years. He subsequently joined the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering (MSE) at Simon Fraser University.
Professor Kim has held several leadership roles at SFU, including the Scientific Director of the British Columbia Centre for Agritech Innovation (BCCAI).[7] In 2024, he was named the Director of the SFU Global Institute for Agritech, a multi-faculty research initiative focused on global food security and agricultural innovation.[8] He also serves as the Co-Director of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) Food Security & Agritech Program.[9] In addition to his role at SFU, he has held an adjunct professorship in Materials Science and Engineering at KAIST since 2023, for two consecutive terms totaling six years (2023–2028).[10]
His research dedicated to innovation in the biomedical[11] and climate-smart agritech sectors by establishing industry partnerships and community engagement to identify real-world challenges and translate research into practical solutions.
