Early life and education
Utomo was born and raised in Surabaya.[4] Utomo completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Southern California – Marshall School of Business, then went on to earn a master’s degree at Columbia University, New York, where he graduated magna cum laude.[5]
Career
Utomo began his career at Google in Singapore. On June 8, 2014, he co-founded IDN with his brother, William.[3] Under his leadership, IDN has grown into one of the largest media technology companies in Southeast Asia.[6]
Since its founding, IDN has secured five rounds of funding to support its expansion. The first funding was a seed investment from East Ventures on September 7, 2015. On September 5, 2016, IDN secured Series A funding from North Base Media, GDP Venture (Djarum Group), East Ventures, and MNM Creative (a film company from the U.S.). Series B funding was obtained on November 21, 2017, from East Ventures and Central Exchange Hong Kong.[6] On January 8, 2019, IDN secured Series C funding from EV Growth, a consortium of East Ventures, Sinar Mas, Yahoo! Japan.[7] IDN also received investment from the biggest conglomerate in Thailand, Charoen Pokphand and LINE Ventures.[6][7]
On June 6, 2022, IDN secured Series D funding from a group of investors, including Mayapada Group, KMIF (a consortium of major Indonesian conglomerates), East Ventures, OCBC NISP Ventura, Dentsu Group, and V Media Ventures.[8] This investment solidified IDN’s position as one of the largest media technology companies in Southeast Asia. IDN provides digital media, livestreaming, creator economy and entertainment,[8] which now serves over 70 million monthly active users across Indonesia.[9]
Awards and recognition
In 2017, alongside his brother, he was included in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia in the Media, Marketing, and Advertising category, making them the only Indonesians to receive the award.[10] On May 7, 2017, Winston received the Marketeers Netizen Award at Jakarta Marketing Week 2017. In 2022, he was listed in Tatler Asia’s Gen.T 2022.[2]
In 2024, Utomo and his brother were honored with the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2024 award for their innovation and leadership in building IDN as a leading consumer technology company in Indonesia.[11] This award highlighted their success in driving significant changes in Indonesia’s media and entertainment industry, combining technology, content, and community to empower younger generations.[11] This makes Winston and William the youngest recipient in the history of EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2024.[11][12]
Leadership and global role
Beyond his role at IDN, Utomo serves as a main leader of the Global Shapers Jakarta, an initiative of the World Economic Forum dedicated to driving positive change through young leaders. He was also recognized as an Endeavor Entrepreneur during the International Selection Panel (ISP) in Miami, United States.[9]
