Abel Guillermo Gómez-Morón Santos (Lima, Peru; March 4, 1943 – October 6, 2023), known professionally as Willy Gómez, was a Peruvian architect, industrial designer, and entrepreneur. He founded the firms Chiru Enterprises Inc., GG International Casino Design, and Pircanato. His work included furniture manufacturing, interior architecture for casinos in the Americas and Europe, and the development of construction systems using recycled materials.
Biography
Born in Lima on March 4, 1943, Gómez was the nephew of Arturo Gómez Morón, a painter and professor at the National Superior Autonomous School of Fine Arts of Peru.[1]
He studied architecture at the National University of Engineering (UNI) in Peru and continued studies in the United States focused on corporate design and hospitality.[2] His early career involved industrial modeling, where he developed mockups for aerospace and energy projects. This experience influenced his later use of structural detail and metals.[2]
Professional career
Chiru Enterprises
In the early 1970s, he moved to Los Angeles, California. On June 12, 1973, he incorporated Chiru Enterprises Inc.,[3] a manufacturing company co-founded with architect Miller Fong.
The firm manufactured fixtures such as chandeliers, lamps, bronze doors, and fountains.[2] In the furniture sector, the company participated in the production of the Wiggle Side Chair (1972) designed by Frank Gehry, under the label Easy Edges Inc./Chiru Enterprises Inc.[4] Gómez is credited in the catalog California Design '76[5] and in the magazine Interiors (1978).[6]
Casino design
His first project in the gaming industry was the remodeling of the Golden Nugget Casino.[2] He subsequently worked on projects in Las Vegas, including the Tropicana, Flamingo Hilton, Hilton Las Vegas, Four Queens, Desert Inn, and The Dunes.[2]
In 1994, he returned to Peru to work on the Casino at the Sheraton Lima Hotel.[2] Through his firm GG International Casino Design, he designed gaming halls in Argentina, Venezuela, Panama, and the Caribbean.[2]
Selected works:
- Admiral Prater (Vienna): Architecture of the venue later known as Admiral Arena Prater.[7]
- Casino Montecarlo (Quito): Construction and decoration.[8]
- Casino Allegre (Medellín): Designed for the Ritzio International group.[7]
- Gran Casino de Ceuta (2015): Interior remodeling.[9]
- Luckia Casino Arica (2017): Interior architecture in Arica, Chile.[10]
- Casino de Vigo (2018): Interior design at the A Laxe shopping center.[11]
Pircanato
In his final years, he founded the studio Pircanato and developed Plastidobe, a system of modular blocks made from recycled plastic (HDPE) and compacted earth. The design facilitates root growth inside the walls.[12][13]
The system was presented at the VISION 2022 congress at the University of San Martín de Porres.[14]
Awards
- 2016–2017: Iron A' Design Award (Building Materials Design) for Plastidobe Ecological Housing.[12]
- 2017–2018: Iron A' Design Award (Interior Space Design) for Luckia Casino Arica.[15]
