Career

William Smart is a New Zealand born architect who practices in Australia. He was born in Cambridge in 1968. His family moved to Australia in 1969 and after a year of travel they settled in Albury, Western Australia [1]. William studied architecture at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, winning the RAIA WH Robertson Memorial Student Prize in 1990 upon graduating with Honours Distinction. [2]

In 1992 William moved to Europe. His first role was with Gersau Architecture in France, before landing a job at Foster & Partners in London, the international architecture firm known for projects such as London’s Millenium Bridge and the Reichstag Dome in Berlin. [3] After five years abroad William returned to Australia, settling in Sydney where he worked at Hassell for two years. In 1997 he set up Smart Design Studio. [4]

William is the Founder and Creative Director of Smart Design Studio. The multidisciplinary studio has grown from one to 50 staff members over the 25 years in business. William’s approach has always been holistic, combining both architectural and interior design with passionate attention to detail. Although varied in scale, the projects are united by an ethos of “Architecture from the Inside Out”.[5]

The portfolio of work has grown from the modest early commissions for alterations and addition to a wide range of projects ranging from large-scale master planning, cultural buildings, offices, workplaces to private houses and product design. In 2012 William was commissioned by philanthropist Dr Judith Neilson AM to design the best house in the world. This was a turning point for Smart Design Studio. [6] Known as Indigo Slam, this awe-inspiring house and showcase for her collection on contemporary Chinese art received 18 awards and was widely published. [7]

Other significant projects include The Rail Operations Centre [8], boutique multi residential development Pipi in Bondi and Stokes 14, the industrial warehouse that was converted into the studio headquarters with a caretaker’s apartment above. This multi award winning project is carbon neutral and exemplary of Smart Design’s approach to design. [9]

As Creative Director of the studio, William is involved every project from start to finish. His designs have been widely published and received critical acclaim, having received 100 international and national awards for architecture, urban design and interior design. [10]

William was also the recipient of Inde Awards Luminary Award in 2019 [11]. William has also taught and lectured across Australia, published written work and is an active participant in the design community.
