William Richard Henry Hanson (Born September 2, 1989) is a British etiquette expert, author, and host of podcasts Help! I Sexted My Boss and Keeping Up Appearances: The Luxury Podcast. He is currently the Executive Director and Owner of The English Manner, an etiquette and protocol coaching company. [1][2]

Early life

Hanson was born on September 2, 1989, in Bristol, England. He is the brother of BBC Radio Bristol host, James Hanson.[3]

Hanson described interest in a number of careers during his formative years, from a newsreader to a spy and the Archbishop of Canterbury. Hanson received his first book on etiquette from his grandmother, 'John Morgan's Tome on Etiquette', on his twelfth birthday, and his interest subsequently grew.[4] From the age of 17, Hanson began teaching table manners to third form (year nine) classes at his school, for which he was featured in a local paper, as well as TV and Radio reports - leading him to be branded "Britain's Youngest Etiquette Expert".[5][6][7][8]

Hanson attended Clifton College from 1996-2008. He graduated from the University of Manchester with a BA (Hons.) English Language, Literacy & Communication in 2011.[9]

Career

William Hanson is described as being "regarded as one of Britain’s freshest and most trusted authorities on etiquette", and "one of the UK's leading etiquette consultants and society commentators."[10]

Hanson's work is based in London, including West London where he resides, though his outreach expands globally.[2]

Since 2019, Hanson has been the Owner and Executive Director of The English Manner, a leading UK etiquette and protocol institute which offers courses globally.[2][11]

Hanson is the author of two books, 'Bluffer's Guide to Etiquette: Instant Wit and Wisdom' [12] and 'Bluffer's Guide to Entertaining: Instant Wit and Wisdom'[10], and co-author of two further books, 'Protocol to Manage Relationships Today: Modern Relationship Management Based Upon Traditional Values'[13], and 'Help I Sexted My Boss' [14] (Written alongside BBC Radio 1 DJ Jordan North).

Hanson has guest-featured on a number of popular British television programmes due to his work in the etiquette industry, featuring on This Morning, Let’s do lunch with Gino and Mel, The One Show, and Jeremy Vine.[1][15] Hanson has also been a regular guest on BBC One primetime quiz show The Wheel hosted by Michael McIntyre.[16]

Hanson is the host of popular biweekly podcast Help! I Sexted My Boss, alongside BBC Radio 1 DJ and Television Presenter Jordan North, where the duo act as 'agony aunts', offering advice in response to listener write-ins. Hanson also offers Etiquette advice.[17] The pair have gone on to launch a number of tours,[18] merchandise, and most recently a book[17] (due to be released in November 2023), through the podcast's immense success. The podcast celebrated its 5th birthday on 20th March 2023.

Hanson is also the host of Keeping Up Appearances: The Luxury Podcast, along side BBC Three Counties Radio host Jonathan Vernon-Smith.

Personal life

Hanson is openly gay. On September 16, 2022, he married BBC Radio Bristol presenter Mikey Worrall.[19]
