Will Salisbury is a Sculptor and Philosopher, Designer, Contractor, Husband, Teacher, Welder, Anthropologist and Friend. Born, October 9, 1949 in Syracuse, NY, he's lived in Mexico, Big Sur, Asbury Street, Florence and for the last half of his life, summers on an island in the St. Lawrence River and during the winter, next to his studio in Omar, New York His sculpture in stone, ceramics, welded steel, copper, wood, or concrete is often informed by his concern for social justice provoked by stories from National Public Radio that get stuck in his head until he fashions a sculpture that expresses them visually. His 2020 retrospective at The Thousand Islands Arts Center in Clayton, NY looks to casual visitors like a group show, perhaps the result of a dozen very skilled craftsmen. There are stone renderings of mothers with children, machetes representing the Rwandan Genocide, a painful sculpture of a mother standing over a drowned child, a family fleeing an unknown catastrophe. And then there are the drawings, probably not by the same hands. And there is public art that enlarges local mythology to giant, even comic, proportions: a 5 foot Muskie leaping out of the water; 6 foot tall crow; a 7 foot long sturgeon; an 8 foot tall standing bear weathervane 90 feet above the river on top of a "cottage". Paul Bunyan's Golf Bag is Will Salisbury's first public art project, dated 1984. It’s now exhibited along Route 12 at the Clayton Country Club.
