Will Jawando is an American politician and attorney. He currently is a member of the Montgomery County Council At-Large. Jawando announced on May 2nd, 2023 that he was running for the Maryland senate seat of retiring incumbent Ben Cardin.[2]

Early life and education

Jawando was born in Silver Spring, Maryland, to an American mother and a Nigerian father. He was raised exclusively by his mother in the Silver Spring neighborhood of Long Branch after his parents separated when he was "around 6."[3] Jawando graduated from Catholic University with a B.A. in Sociology before moving on to attend the Columbus School of Law where he graduated with a J.D.

Career

Jawando worked as a Capitol Hill staffer for Nancy Pelosi, Sherrod Brown and Barack Obama while he was a senator.[3] He was an associate director in the White House office of public engagement during the Obama administration.[4]

In 2016, Jawando ran to represent Maryland's 8th congressional district in the 115th Congress of the U.S. House of Representatives. Jamie Raskin won the primary and general election.

On May 3, 2022, Jawando published a book, My Seven Black Fathers, about inspirational figures in his life.[4]

Personal life

Jawando is married with 4 children.

In November 2021, Jawando missed a court hearing he had requested to contest two traffic citations. Jawando's chief of staff stated that he paid the fines before his license was to be suspended in response to the absence.[5]
