Welwitchia University is a private university in Namibia. It was established in 2013 as the Welwitchia Health Training Centre before being granted university status by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in 2024. The institution offers programmes in health sciences, education, law, commerce, social work, and management studies.[1].
History
Welwitchia University was founded in September 2013 by Scholastika Ndatinda Iipinge and Monika Pendukeni as the Welwitchia Health Training Centre [2]. In June 2024, the National Council for Higher Education granted the institution full university status, after which it became known as Welwitchia University [3].
Campuses
Welwitchia University operates campuses in several regions of Namibia. Its main campus is located in Windhoek, with additional campuses in Walvis Bay, Kombat, Mururani, Nkurenkuru, Katima Mulilo, and Outapi.
Academic structure
The university comprises several schools, including:
- School of Nursing
- School of Allied and Public Health
- School of Pharmacy
- School of Law and Commerce
- School of Social Work
- School of Education
- Centre for Distance and E-Learning
The university offers certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programmes accredited within the Namibian National Qualifications Framework. Fields of study include nursing, pharmacy, environmental health, social work, education, law, occupational health and safety, and monitoring and evaluation .
Partnerships
The University has entered into regional collaborations with higher education institutions Mutare Polytechnic in Zimbabwe [4]. In 2024, it signed a memorandum of agreement with Mutare Polytechnic aimed at academic cooperation and skills development. It has also concluded a memorandum of understanding with the Harare Institute of Public Health to support collaboration in teaching, research, and community engagement in public health [5]
