As of the late 1990s, web series (also known as web show) are a series of written or non-scripted online videos, often in episodic form, that are uploaded on the Internet. Web series became increasingly popular in the early 2000s after initially appearing in the late 1990s. A single episode or "webisode" of a web series programme might be referred to as a single instance of the programme; however, the phrase is not often used. Web series may generally be seen on a variety of platforms and devices, including desktop computers, laptop computers, tablets, and smartphones. This is in contrast to streaming television, which may be accessed via a variety of different streaming services.

According to the most recent available data, a variety of awards have been created to recognise excellence in web series, including the Streamys, Webbys, IAWTV, and Indie Series Awards, but the Streamys and IAWTV also recognise shows that are available on streaming services. There are other web series festivals, the most notable of which are held in Los Angeles and Vancouver. Most major award ceremonies, like the Emmy Awards and the Canadian Screen Awards, have added categories for web series and digital media to their lineups.
