Washington Psychological Wellness (WPW) is an American multidisciplinary mental health practice founded in 2018 and based in Maryland. The practice provides psychotherapy, psychological testing and assessment, psychiatric medication services, mental health coaching, and telehealth services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families.

WPW operates three Maryland locations in Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Germantown. Its telehealth services are available to clients in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and additional U.S. states depending on the licensure of the individual clinician providing care.

The practice provides individual, couples, family and group psychotherapy and works with clients experiencing a range of emotional, behavioral, relational, developmental and life-transition concerns. WPW describes its clinical model as integrative and individualized, with clinicians drawing on different evidence-based therapeutic approaches according to the needs of each client.[1]

WPW is a multicultural and LGBTQ+ affirming practice and provides care to clients across different cultural backgrounds, identities, family structures and relationship structures.[2]

History

Washington Psychological Wellness was founded in 2018 by clinical psychologist Dr. Leda Kaveh. The organization developed as a multidisciplinary mental health practice providing psychotherapy and related behavioral health services in Montgomery County, Maryland.

WPW currently operates three locations in Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Germantown, Maryland, in addition to providing telehealth services.

The practice is also associated with Washington Insight Solutions, a sister practice established to provide more extensive psychological, psychoeducational and related assessment services.

Services

Washington Psychological Wellness provides mental health services across the lifespan through a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists, psychology associates, coaches, prescribers, and clinicians in supervised training roles.

Its principal services include individual psychotherapy, relationship and family therapy, group therapy, psychological assessment, medication management, coaching and telehealth.

Individual therapy

WPW provides individual psychotherapy for children, adolescents and adults. Treatment is individualized according to a client's age, presenting concerns, goals and circumstances.

Child and play therapy may incorporate developmentally appropriate methods for helping children communicate experiences, develop emotional awareness and strengthen interpersonal and coping skills.

Adolescent therapy addresses emotional, social, family and academic concerns that can arise during adolescence, while adult psychotherapy is offered for a range of emotional, relational and life concerns.[3]

Couples and relationship therapy

The practice provides couples and relationship therapy for individuals seeking assistance with communication, conflict, intimacy, trust, relationship transitions and other interpersonal concerns.

Its relationship services are available to clients across different relationship structures and are intended to provide an inclusive setting in which relationship dynamics can be explored without assuming a single model of partnership.

Family therapy

WPW provides family therapy for a range of family structures. Treatment may address communication difficulties, family conflict, parenting concerns, developmental changes, separation, blended-family dynamics and other transitions affecting relationships between family members.[4]

Group therapy

The practice periodically provides psychotherapy groups, support groups, workshops and structured group programs addressing mental health, personal development and shared life experiences.

Past programs have included groups for children, college students and young professionals, LGBTQ+ adults and individuals working on confidence and self-esteem. The availability and focus of groups vary over time.[5]

Teletherapy

WPW provides psychotherapy and other eligible services through telehealth.

Telehealth services are available in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and additional states depending on the licensure of the individual clinician. The geographical availability of a particular service therefore varies according to professional licensing requirements and the clinician providing treatment.

Teletherapy enables clients to participate in appointments remotely through secure video-based platforms.[6]

Psychological testing and assessment

Psychological testing and assessment remain among the services provided by Washington Psychological Wellness. WPW conducts certain psychological assessments as part of its broader clinical services, including evaluations that may assist with diagnostic clarification and treatment planning.[7]

The practice also has a sister organization, Washington Insight Solutions, which specializes more extensively in psychological and educational assessment. Washington Insight Solutions provides comprehensive psychological, psychoeducational, ADHD, autism, neuropsychological, admissions and related evaluations.

Accordingly, Washington Psychological Wellness continues to provide some psychological testing services, while clients requiring more comprehensive or specialized assessment may be referred to Washington Insight Solutions.[8]

Medication evaluation and management

Washington Psychological Wellness provides psychiatric medication evaluation and ongoing medication management as part of its mental health services.

Medication services may be provided independently or alongside psychotherapy when clinically appropriate. Evaluation typically considers the client's symptoms, mental health history, current medications and treatment needs, with follow-up appointments used to monitor response and make adjustments when appropriate.

Mental health coaching

WPW provides coaching services as a complement to its psychotherapy and behavioral health services. Coaching is generally future-oriented and focuses on identifying goals, developing strategies and supporting implementation and accountability.[9]

The practice's coaching services include:

  • ADHD and executive-function coaching, addressing areas such as organization, planning, time management, task initiation and follow-through;
  • Parent coaching, providing individualized strategies related to communication, routines, parenting challenges and family transitions;
  • Career coaching, focused on professional goals, career changes, decision-making and career development;
  • Life coaching, supporting goal-setting, personal development and decision-making;
  • Life-transition coaching, addressing transitions such as career changes, parenthood, relationship changes, relocation and retirement; and
  • Health and wellness coaching, focused on personal health goals, sustainable habits, stress management, balance and general well-being.[10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]

Clinical approach

Washington Psychological Wellness uses an individualized approach to treatment rather than applying a single therapeutic model across all clients. Its clinicians have backgrounds in a variety of evidence-based and integrative approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, trauma-informed therapy, person-centered approaches, psychodynamic methods, family systems approaches and play-based interventions.

The particular approach used depends on factors including the client's age, clinical needs, treatment goals, cultural background and preferences.

The practice works with concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma and post-traumatic stress, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, grief and loss, stress, relationship concerns, life transitions, self-esteem, academic difficulties and family-related concerns.

Inclusive care

Washington Psychological Wellness describes itself as a multicultural and LGBTQ+ affirming mental health practice. Its clinicians work with individuals from a range of cultural, racial, ethnic, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds and across different gender identities and sexual orientations.[16]

The practice's approach to inclusive care considers the role that culture, identity, family background, lived experience, values and community may play in an individual's mental health and therapeutic experience.

WPW also provides LGBTQ+ affirming mental health care for individuals, couples and families. Its clinical services are intended to accommodate different identities, family structures and relationship structures without assuming a particular model of family or partnership.

Care Model and Community Initiatives

In addition to clinical services, Washington Psychological Wellness uses an intake and care-navigation model intended to assist clients with finding an appropriate provider and beginning treatment.

Dedicated Client Liaison

WPW provides prospective and new clients with administrative and care-navigation support during the initial stages of accessing services. The practice's client liaison function assists with initial consultations, identifying an appropriate service, therapist matching, appointment scheduling and navigating the process of beginning care.

The liaison role is intended to provide a consistent point of contact during intake rather than requiring prospective clients to independently contact multiple clinicians.

Thoughtful therapist matching

The practice uses an individualized therapist-matching process when placing new clients. Matching considerations may include the client's clinical needs, treatment goals, preferences, clinician expertise, scheduling availability, preferred office location or telehealth needs, and applicable insurance considerations.

The process is intended to identify a clinician whose experience and availability reasonably correspond with the client's circumstances rather than assigning clients solely according to the next available appointment.

Right Fit Promise

WPW provides additional therapist-matching support when a client believes that the initial therapist pairing is not an appropriate fit.

Suggested neutral wording once the exact terms are confirmed:

Under its Right Fit Promise, Washington Psychological Wellness provides additional matching assistance to clients when the initial therapist-client pairing does not feel appropriate. The practice works with the client to identify another clinician whose approach, experience, availability or other characteristics may better align with the client's needs.

Before publishing, confirm with WPW whether there are any specific conditions, time periods, consultation arrangements, financial terms, or limits associated with the Right Fit Promise.

Paying It Forward

WPW has established a community-support initiative known as Paying It Forward.

Suggested structure once the exact program details are supplied:

Through its Paying It Forward initiative, Washington Psychological Wellness supports members of the community who may otherwise face barriers to accessing mental health or wellness resources. The initiative forms part of the practice's broader community-engagement activities.

Before publication, WPW should confirm exactly how the program operates, who is eligible or supported, what form the assistance takes, whether it is funded by WPW or through donations, and whether any recurring or fixed commitment forms part of the program.

Community outreach

Washington Psychological Wellness participates in community-based mental health education and outreach in the communities it serves.

Its outreach activities include participation in local events, educational initiatives, community partnerships, tabling and public-awareness activities, and the development of referral relationships with health professionals, schools, counselors, community organizations and other service providers.

The practice also accepts professional referrals and collaborates with referring providers, subject to appropriate client consent, as part of continuity and coordination of care.[17]

Clinical team

Washington Psychological Wellness operates as a multidisciplinary mental health practice. Its clinical team has included psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychology associates, mental health coaches and other behavioral-health professionals.

Rather than maintaining a fixed roster in encyclopedic descriptions, the practice's current team is published through its official website because individual clinicians and their roles may change over time.

The organization was founded and is directed by Dr. Leda Kaveh, a licensed clinical psychologist.

Training and supervision

In addition to independently licensed professionals, Washington Psychological Wellness provides supervised clinical training opportunities.

These opportunities may include placements for graduate interns, doctoral externs and prelicensed clinicians working toward advanced degrees, clinical experience or professional licensure.

Clinicians working in supervised roles practice within the applicable professional, educational and licensing requirements and receive clinical supervision as required.

This training structure allows the practice to participate in the professional development of future mental health clinicians while maintaining oversight by appropriately credentialed professionals.

Washington Insight Solutions

Washington Insight Solutions is a sister practice of Washington Psychological Wellness specializing in psychological and educational assessment.

Although WPW itself continues to provide certain psychological testing and assessment services, Washington Insight Solutions has a more extensive assessment-focused practice. It conducts comprehensive evaluations involving cognitive, academic, developmental, behavioral and psychological functioning.

Services offered through Washington Insight Solutions include comprehensive psychological assessment, psychoeducational evaluation, ADHD testing, autism assessment, neuropsychological testing, admissions testing and other specialized evaluations.

The distinction enables WPW to retain psychological assessment as part of its broader mental health practice while directing clients seeking more extensive testing to an organization primarily structured around assessment.[18]

Locations

Washington Psychological Wellness maintains three physical locations in Montgomery County, Maryland:

  • Gaithersburg, Maryland
  • Rockville, Maryland
  • Germantown, Maryland

In addition to its physical offices, the practice provides telehealth services in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia and other states in which individual clinicians are appropriately licensed.

Community and professional relationships

Washington Psychological Wellness works with healthcare providers, educational professionals, social workers, counselors, community organizations and other professionals through referral and care-coordination relationships.

The practice accepts referrals from healthcare professionals, school counselors, therapists, social workers, attorneys, community organizations, family members and clients themselves.[19]

With appropriate written authorization, its clinicians may also communicate with referring professionals and other members of a client's treatment or support team.
