Fashion stylists are consultants who help celebrities, models, and other public personalities choose clothes for editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, concert appearances, and any other public appearances they may make. They are also known as wardrobe stylists. Stylists are often members of a wider creative team formed by the client, working in collaboration with the fashion designer, photographer/director, hair stylist, and makeup artist to create a specific style or theme for the specific project in question. Fashion stylist, fashion editor, and celebrity stylist are all terms used to refer to a wardrobe stylist. In one opinion, "Stylists are the ones that push each star to make the best dressed list," and they also help with editorial photo shoots.

Costume designers, on the other hand, are responsible for dressing characters in films, television shows, and theatrical productions. A wardrobe stylist is also distinguished from other types of consultants, such as image consultants and colour consults. Without understanding the fundamental concepts of line and style, one may work as a colour consultant. As contrast to working only with celebrities, an image consultant is a specialist in both colour and line and may advise with business executives or people. It is the objective of a colour consultant to find the most attractive colours for their client; however, it is the goal of an image consultant to convey a narrative about their client via clothing and other visual elements.
