Waltteri Väyrynen (born July 5, 1994) is a Finnish drummer. He is the current drummer of the Swedish progressive metal band Opeth.[1] He was previously a member of Paradise Lost and Bodom After Midnight.
Career
In 2014, Väyrynen answered a Facebook ad for a live drummer for Paradise Lost frontman Gregory Mackintosh's side project, Vallenfyre. The next year, Paradise Lost, in a similar situation, brought Väyrynen on as a session drummer, and then later as a full time member.[2] Väyrynen remained as an active member of Paradise Lost until 2022.
In 2016, Väyrynen joined Tomi Koivusaari’s side project Abhorrence[3], of which he is still a member as of January 2024.[4] In 2019, Väyrynen joined Bodom After Midnight, founding member Alexi Laiho's continuation of the recently disbanded Children of Bodom, but the project was short-lived following Laiho's death in 2020.[5][6] In 2022, he contributed to the Finnish black metal project I Am The Night.[7]
In September 2022, Väyrynen left Paradise Lost to join the Swedish progressive metal band Opeth.[8][9] Opeth has since toured with Väyrynen as its live drummer,[10] and recorded its first studio album with Väyrynen on drums, The Last Will and Testament, which is scheduled for release in October 2024.[11]
