Walter Robert Schmidetzki , born January 5 , 1913 in Sohrau , died unknown, was a German SS officer who served in Flossenbürg , Auschwitz-Birkenau and Natzweiler concentration camps, among others . He attained the rank of Obersturmführer in June 1944.

Biography

Walter Schmidetzki entered the Schutzstaffel (SS) in August 1934 and was recruited into the Waffen-SS in September 1939. He joined the SS-Totenkopfverbände in 1942 and was active in Dachau until December of that year. The following year, Schmidetzki was ordered to the Hinzert concentration camp, located in the Rhine Province , about 30 kilometers from the border with Luxembourg.

Auschwitz

After serving in Flossenbürg for a few months in early 1944, Schmidetzki was posted to Auschwitz-Birkenau in May , where he became head of the disinfection chambers. In June he was promoted to Obersturmführer and given charge of the storage barracks, in which the prisoners' clothing and valuables were sorted and stored for onward transport to Berlin; these barracks were called Kanada[1]. Later in 1944, Schmidetzki was appointed head of the administration at Auschwitz III–Monowitz alongside his existing role. In mid-January 1945 , the Red Army approached Auschwitz and the SS had the camp complex evacuated.

Höcker album

Walter Schmidetzki appears in some photographs in the Höcker album published in 2007, compiled by Karl Höcker, Adjutant to the Auschwitz Commandant Richard Baer. Among other things, the album contains photographs showing SS officers and staff from Auschwitz at the nearby Solahütte recreation facility . Schmidetzki is seen in a number of the photpgraphs together with Josef Kramer , Josef Mengele, Otto Moll, Anton Thumann, Rudolf Hoess, Richard Baer and Karl Höcker[2].

In July 1948 Schmidetzki was sentenced to 3 years in prison by a court in Kraków[3].
