Walter Macarthur Reid (born 6 August 1944) is a historian specializing in twentieth-century British history, with a focus on imperial policies. He has published books on British military history and imperial policy which have generated academic and public debate.

Early Life and Education

Reid studied at The Glasgow Academy before reading Modern History at Jesus College, Oxford. He later studied Law at the University of Edinburgh.

Career

Legal Career

Reid worked as a partner at Hagart and Burn-Murdoch, WS, in Edinburgh and later as the senior partner at T F Reid & Donaldson in Paisley. He is a Writer to His Majesty's Signet and served on the Council of the WS Society.

Historical Research and Writing

Since leaving legal practice, Reid has focused on historical research and writing. His work examines British imperial policies and military history. His biography of Field Marshal Haig, Architect of Victory, is a major revisionist appraisal of the British commander-in-chief in the First World War and was nominated by the Herald as its book of the year in December 2006. His book Fighting Retreat: Winston Churchill and India (2023) received criticism from historians including Andrew Roberts[1] and Zareer Masani,[2] while it received favorable reviews from Professor Gerard De Groot[3] in The Times, Professor Alan Lester in Asian Affairs[4] and numerous other reviewers in India and Britain.

He is a Fellow of the Haig Fellowship, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society for his contribution to scholarship.

Early in his career, Reid was a journalist, contributing regularly to publications, including the Scotsman and the Herald. He was also involved in broadcasting, presenting Northbeat for BBC Scotland and hosting Women’s Hour from Scotland. He has participated in radio and podcast discussions related to historical topics.

Reid frequently speaks at literary events, including the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the Wigtown Book Festival, Aye Write (Glasgow Book Festival), and the Chandigarh Military Literary Festival.
