Vosit Vohidovich Vohidov (was born in 1917 in Turkistan City) was a Soviet Uzbek surgeon and scientist, the founder of the school of specialized surgical care in Uzbekistan. He held a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree (1962) and the title of professor, and he was an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.

Biography

He was born on December 13, 1917, in a peasant family in the village of Chaga in the Turkistan city.[1][2][3][4][5][6] The Vakhidov family worked on lands near the city of Turkistan. His father, Abdvakhit Khalmatov, had nine children, two of whom died at an early age.[1][6] The remaining seven, including the youngest, Vasit, assisted their father in the household. Their mother, Khodzhara Khalmatova, was responsible for the family and the upbringing of the children.[1][3]

He graduated from the Tashkent Medical Institute(now Tashkent Medical Academy) in 1939.[6][7][4][3] He defended his candidate dissertation in 1950 on the topic of "The Function of the Pancreas in Purulent Diseases" and his doctoral dissertation in 1962 on the topic of "Pleural Adhesions and the Significance of Their Vessels in Pulmonary Circulation".[6][3] On November 27, 1973, a resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR.[1][3] On December 6, 1973, a decree by the Minister of Health of the USSR, Academician B. V. Petrovsky, No. 970, was issued regarding "The Organization of a Branch of the All-Union Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery of the Ministry of Health of the USSR in Tashkent".[1][3][6] Professor Vasit Vakhidovich Vakhidov was appointed as the director of the branch of the All-Union Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery.[1] He established and remained the director of the Tashkent branch of the All-Union Scientific Research Center for Surgery until the end of his life.[6]

Works

He authored over 180 scientific works dedicated to the study of almost all branches of surgery, including diseases of the lungs, mediastinal organs, biliary tract, liver, stomach, heart, major blood vessels of the lower extremities, emergency surgical conditions of the abdominal organs, and more.[1][8][6][4] He supervised the training of 15 doctors and 60 candidates of sciences. He was an active member of the World Association of Surgeons, the editor of the "Medical Journal of Uzbekistan," and a member of the editorial board of the "Surgery" journal.[1][9][7][6][10]

Awards

  • "Order of Outstanding Merit" (August 25, 2003, posthumously) - for his contribution to the development of science and culture in Uzbekistan.[6][11]
  • Order of Lenin (1976).
  • "Honored Scientist of Uzbekistan" (1967)[9][12]
  • "Badge of Honor" Order (February 11, 1961) - for his services in preserving the health of the Soviet people and developing the field of medicine.

Memory

By the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated July 6, 1995, the aforementioned Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Surgery was named after him.[7][9][12]
