Vivek Sood is an Indian Senior Advocate and Author.[1][2] He is focused in Criminal Laws especially White Collar and Technology Crimes, Cyber Laws, Business Laws, Arbitration and Constitutional Law.[3][4][5]

Career

Sood was born into a family of lawyers. As he was deeply interested in law, he decided to practice law while he was studying at Mayo College, Ajmer. After completing his LLB from Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, he started his law practice in the year 1992. Initially, he worked with legal stalwarts such as Shardul Shroff (Amarchand Mangaldas) and Mohan Lal Varma (Senior Advocate & Retd. Judge of Delhi High Court) and started his independent practice in 1996.[6]

In 2015, Sood was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court[2] and continues to be engaged in myriad types of criminal cases including heinous offences and white-collar crimes mainly in courts in Delhi and travels to other parts of India as well. He has been the defense counsel in innumerable cases highlighted in the media, such as the Jessica Lal murder, the Telgi fake stamps scam, Kidney trade scam, the Cooperative Group Housing Societies scam, and innumerable CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation), DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence), and ED (Enforcement Directorate) cases. He has been engaged as counsel by the Government of India, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Multi-National Companies, and individual litigants including prisoners.[6]

He is also an arbitrator on the panel of DIAC (New Delhi International Arbitration Centre) and ICA (Indian Council of Arbitration).[7][8]

For his remarkable work of more than 30 years in the legal field, he was awarded as an Emerging Senior Counsel of the Year at the UK-India Legal Partnership Annual Awards 2022.[9][10]

Sood is a prolific author of numerous books. He has simplified complex legal issues in his writings for the general audience to understand the legal issues well.[3][11]

He coined the expression 'Fundamental Right To Internet', the title of one of his books released in 2011. This expression was first used by the Supreme Court in the Kashmir Internet Shut Case in 2019. He coined another expression, 'The Emergence of Commercial Justice', title of another book released in 2021. The context of this expression was the legislations in the arbitration and insolvency space.[4]
