Virginia Maloney (born September 10, 1987) is an American businesswoman and political candidate. Maloney is running in the 2025 New York City Council election for the Democratic nomination from the 4th district, which includes the Upper East Side, Sutton Place, Midtown East, Kips Bay, Murray Hill, and Stuyvesant Town–Peter Cooper Village.[1][2][3]

Early life and education

Maloney was born and raised on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She is the daughter of Carolyn Maloney, a former member of the United States House of Representatives, and Clifton Maloney, an investment banker and U.S. Navy veteran.[4][5][6]

Maloney graduated from Princeton University with a BA in public policy and environmental studies. She later earned a MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School and a MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.[7][8][9]

Career

Maloney is currently a project manager at Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.[10]

She previously worked for the New York City Economic Development Corporation, managing projects focused on job creation and digital infrastructure.[11] Maloney co-founded a startup, Nesterly, which focused on affordable housing and senior care, winning the 2017 NYC BigApps award.[12]

Political involvement

Maloney serves on the Executive Committee of the Lexington Democratic Club and was a 2023 and 2024 New York Judicial Delegate.[13]

In November 2024, Maloney filed to run for New York City's 4th City Council district, a seat currently held by Keith Powers, who is term-limited and running for Manhattan Borough President.[14]
