Vin Gupta is an American physician specializing in pulmonary/critical care medicine, Major in the United States Air Force Medical Reserve Corps, Senior Principal Scientist at Amazon, and Affiliate Faculty of Health Metrics Sciences at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, part of the University of Washington. Gupta attended Princeton University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He continued his education at Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physician and Surgeons, where he received his Doctor of Medicine. While in medical school, he spent two years abroad as a Doris Duke and Fogarty scholar in research roles focused on emerging respiratory infectious diseases.[3]
Gupta also holds a Masters in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, where he was a Dean's fellow, and a Masters of Studies in International Relations from the University of Cambridge, where he was the recipient of a Rotary Global Grant Fellowship.[4]
He completed his officer commissioning in December 2015 at the United States Air Force Academy.[5]
Gupta completed his training in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital, part of Harvard Medical School.
He is Officer-in-Charge of the Critical Care Air Transport Team at Joint-Base Lewis McChord, where he is a Major in the US Air Force Medical Reserve Corps.[6] [7] He is also Senior Principal and Chief Medical Officer of COVID-19 Response at Amazon. [8] [9] [10] Prior to the pandemic, Dr. Gupta had served in a leadership capacity at Amazon Care. [11]
He remains as Affiliate Faculty at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, part of the University of Washington, School of Medicine[12] and term member of the Council on Foreign Relations. [13] His published academic research and policy work is focused on the effects of climate change on human health,[14] American healthcare reform, [15] and the global burden of respiratory diseases globally. [16]
He serves as a frequent public health analyst for media outlets, receiving public recognition for this work throughout the Coronavirus pandemic. [17] [18] [19]
Gupta was mentioned as a possible selection for United States Surgeon General, [20] earning the endorsement of Congressman Jim Clyburn soon after the 2020 election for the post.[21]
