A video editor is someone who works in the video production and post-production stages of filmmaking. In addition to making decisions about the selection and combining of shots into sequences, the video editor is responsible for the addition of accompanying sound effects and music, all of which contribute to the final creation of a finished film, television programme (including commercials and promos), or snipe. Non-linear editing software is often used by video editors to complete the process of editing videos. A video editor is a technically minded person who makes judgments about video editing that are both artistic and innovative.

A video editor may also refer to a computer device controller that controls video machines to mechanically assemble bits of a film together using a 9-Pin Protocol, which is used to operate video machines. This is also known as machine-to-machine editing or linear editing in certain circles.
