Vela Nigrin (real name and surname Augusta Nigrin; Ljubljana, Slovenia, then part of Austria-Hungary, 14 November 1862 - Belgrade, Serbia, 31 December 1908) was a Slovenian and Serbian stage actress.

Life and work

Father August was a railway official, his daughters Marija, Gizela, Matilda, and Augusta (Vela) were all actresses or singers. Vela first appeared on the stage of the Slovenian Dramatic Society on 19 April 1876 as "Lady Clarens" in the play "Lowood Orphan" and showed great talent, so Davorin Jenko [1]the then director of the Serbian Theater in 1882 contracted her for the National Theater in Belgrade. She soon became one of the first artists of this theater and opportunities for the most demanding roles opened up for her.[2]

She has performed extensively in Prague, Sofia, Zagreb u; she also occasionally visited Ljubljana, where she was received with grateful recognition, but at the same time with critical reservations. [3][1]

The actress who was called "Serbian Sarah Bernhardt occupies one of the most important places in the history of Serbian theater, and she won public acclaim with her talent and beauty, so duels took place because of her, and bohemians in Skadarlija sought solace in alcohol because of her unrequited love. The Serbian government issued a commemorative stamp in her honor [4]and also there is a street in Belgrade named after her.
