  • Veera Ballala III (father)

Veera Ballala IV was the eldest son and heir apparent of Veera Ballala III, the last Hoysala emperor. His father, Veera Ballala III, though a powerful and great ruler, was no match for the experienced forces of Alauddin Khalji, the powerful sultan of Delhi. Forces led by Malik Kafur, one of the most trusted and influential commanders of the sultan, invaded the Hoysala capital of Halebidu, and defeated Veera Ballala III. This defeat forced the king to move to Tiruvannamalai, where he continued resistance against the Delhi sultanate. For confronting the newly found Madurai Sultanate, Veera Ballala III founded a capital at Hosapattna, which later became the capital of the famous Vijayanagar Empire, and would be known as Vijayanagara.

Death

A battle was fought at Kannanur, against the forces of Ghiyas-ud-din, the Sultan of Madurai. The victory seemed clear for the Hoysalas, but Veera Ballala III was captured and taken prisoner, and slain. Veera Ballala IV also faced the same fate as his father in c. 1346. This was the end of the rule of the great Hoysalas.
