Valeria L. G. Barrett (née Goncharova); Belarusian: Валерыя A. Ханчарова; Russian: Валерия A. Гончарова commonly known as Valeria LG Barrett, is a Belarus-born American fashion and costume designer, publisher, and author, known for her contributions to the fashion industry, her magazine, and her distinctive personal style.[1] She has been recognized with notable awards such as "Designer of the Year" by TIM magazine in 2002 in New York and LANFA Fashion Award in Los Angeles in 2014. Barrett is highly regarded as a "citizen of the world" and a fashion icon in Hollywood.[2]

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Barrett was born and raised in Barysaw, a historical city situated on the Berezina River in the Minsk region of the Byelorussian SSR, now its the Republic of Belarus. She is one of two children born to Natalia Goncharova, a celebrated visual artist and art teacher in BSSR, whose artworks are exhibited in private and public collections worldwide, and Alexander Goncharov, an art teacher. Both of her parents have ancestral ties to Polish, Lithuanian, and Russian nobilities.[3]

On her mother's side, Barrett is a descendant of two of the oldest Polish and Grand Duchy noble family lines. One lineage is that of von Leczycki. Her great-grandfather was Baron Faust Jan von der Leczyca (Leczycki) from the Polish noble house of Niesobia, which is currently located in Leczyca Voivodship, Poland. Barrett is also related to the renowned Polish theologian, writer, and mystic Mikołaj Łęczycki, as well as the famous general Platon A. Leczycki. The second lineage on her mother's side is the Russian-Polish hereditary nobility Jakubowiczi.

On her father's side, Barrett is a descendant of the distinguished Russian dynasty of Goncharovi and is related to Natalya N. Goncharova, the wife of the renowned Russian poet of the 19th century, Aleksandr Pushkin.

She attended the Belarusian State University of Culture and Art in Minsk where she started modeling for fashion companies. She showcased her first designs at the Burda Moden Magazine show in Russia and the 1st International High-fashion Show MILA Plus in Belarus. Shortly after, Barrett received critical acclaim and was commissioned to design costumes for VIDARIS Theater and created stage images for Belarusian pop singers and songwriters. At the age of 22, Barrett moved to the United States.[4]

LATER LIFE

In the late '90s, Barrett worked in San Francisco, Los Angles, and New York in the fashion, costume, and entertainment industries, including on- and off-Broadway theatrical productions, broadcasting networks, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Barrett graduated from John Casablanca's Modeling School in San Francisco which led her to work with agencies such as The Grace Del Marco Agency. She appeared in movies including "The Siege," "In & Out," and "The Invisible Man."[5]

In 2000, Barrett launched her first fashion business in New York called ROVA. Her designs quickly gained recognition among celebrities like Michael Jackson and Joe Franklin, as well as many others.

In 2005, she begins leading one of the costume production teams in The Walt Disney Company. In 2012, Barrett officially launched her new consulting company, VALERIA ROVALUTION. The following year, she published her first book, "VALERIA ROVALUTION: Living Life Consciously."[6]

In 2015, Barrett launched Fashion Consciousness Magazine, a color-themed publication featuring fashion, arts, entertainment, and wellness leaders in conscious consumerism.[7]

Barrett served on Boards of Directors for Fashion Group International and Cal State Poly of Pomona. She is an Honorable Member of the Beverly Hills Design Institute, an Alumna and Associate Member of the HEAA at Harvard University in Cambridge, and a founding member and patron of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.[8] Also, Barrett is a Business Counselor for the Orange County Women's Business Center, a business partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Barrett has been married twice and has one daughter from her second marriage.
