Utkal University is the oldest institution in the state of Odisha, as well as the 17th-oldest university in all of India. It is located in Bhubaneswar, Khordha, Odisha. It is a university with a teaching credential affiliation. The current campus at Vani Vihar is situated on a wide 399.9 acre land, and it is situated in the middle of Bhubaneswar.

Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education, University Law College in Vani Vihar are only two examples of the twenty-seven post-graduate teaching and research departments that are now housed on the campus of the university. The Postgraduate Council of the university is directly responsible for the academic oversight of twenty-six sponsored courses in addition to the ordinary courses that are provided. The location of the institution is right in the heart of the city. The distance from the airport is 5 kilometres, while the distance from the train station is 3 kilometres. The Sainik school may be found to its north. To its east is where you'll find the Mancheswar industrial region.

Utkal University took the first three stanzas from the poem "tunga sikhar chula" written by one of its founding members, Godabarish Mishra, and used them as the lyrics of their theme song in 2016.
