Abu Yusuf Uthman Ibn Farooq Khan Yusufzai (Pashto: ابو یوسف عثمان بن فاروق خان یوسف; born 3 July 1977) is an American Islamic scholar and Da'ee. He is known for his work with the One Message Foundation (OMF), a non-profit organisation focused on Islamic outreach through interfaith dialogue, debates, and public discussions.[2] Uthman gained widespread recognition for his street dawah sessions in Balboa Park, San Diego, where he engages in religious discussions and debates with with Christians, atheists, and others. His videos on YouTube have received millions of views.

Early life and education

Uthman was born in Ramadhan 1396 of the Hijri Calendar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan to an Afghan-Pashtun Yusufzai family. He moved to Manchester in the UK with his parents as a child (around the age of 6 or 7) before moving to the United States at the age of 8.[3][4] His parents divorced during his childhood, and Uthman was brought up by his mother. He grew up in San Diego, California, where he was exposed to gang life. As a young adult, he travelled to countries such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates to study under traditional Islamic scholars.[3][5]‬‬‬‬‬‬

Uthman earned several ijazat (Islamic certifications) in various fields of Islamic law and theology, including Hanbali fiqh (jurisprudence), Hadith (prophetic traditions), and Usul al-Fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence) as well as a Masters in Hadith from Madinah University. His mentors included notable scholars like Sheikh Awad al-Gargur, Sadiq al-Manna, Yusuf al-Misha, and others from traditional Islamic seminaries.[3][5] He also holds secular academic qualifications, including a degree in Information Technology and an Executive MBA in Technology Management that he received from National University.[3][6]

Career

Uthman serves as the Imam at Masjid Al-Ribat in San Diego, California.[6] In addition to his role as an Imam, he has dedicated much of his life to dawah (Islamic outreach). In 2014, he founded the One Message Foundation, a non-profit organisation that focused on Islamic education and outreach through debates, lectures, and street dawah.[7]

He is known for his street dawah sessions at Balboa Park, where he regularly engages with passers-bys, including Christians, atheists, and people from other faith backgrounds. His debates, often centred around theological and philosophical topics, are filmed and posted on YouTube, where they have gained significant viewership.

Controversy

On 24 March 2022, Uthman was stabbed at a San Diego gas station by a man who reportedly used anti-Muslim slurs and stalked Uthman to the gas station. Nonetheless, despite the stabbing, Uthman was in a stable condition and was immediately released from the hospital.[8] The assailant was later arrested and charged with assault and hate crimes.[9][10][11][12]

In June 2024, during a Dawah trip in the Caribbean, Uthman was denied entry into Trinidad and Tobago when he and eight members of his group landed at Piarco International Airport as authorities deemed him and his group as undesirable and cited controversy over Uthman's preaching. This move was criticized as being a discriminatory act by Dawah Association president Asad Yacoobali.[13]

In May 2025, the Home Secretary of the UK Yvette Cooper banned Uthman from entering the UK, citing public order concerns over his allegedly extremist views, including comments about slavery and sexual ethics in historical Islamic contexts.[14]

Personal life

Uthman ibn Farooq got married in 2001 to a Pakistani Pashtun woman hailing from a religious family. He has two sons (Yusuf and Musa) and two daughters.[3] He lives in San Diego, California, where he is actively involved in community service. His family is also involved in supporting his dawah activities.[15] In addition to his dawah efforts, Uthman regularly conducts classes and lectures on Islamic theology and practice at Masjid Al-Ribat.[6][7] Furthermore, Uthman has works in the Medical Devices and Consulting industry, currently at Khan Quality Consulting, which is his main source of income.
