Urša Zgojznik (born 1980[1] in Slovenj Gradec, Slovenia) is a Slovenian environmentalist, public speaker, and politician. She is one of the co-founders of the green political party Vesna – Green Party, which advocates for sustainable development, climate justice, and environmental protection.
Early Life and Career
She attended elementary school in Mozirje (1987–1995), the Secondary School of Economics in Celje (1995–1999), and the Faculty of Education in Maribor, majoring in mathematics and pedagogy (1999–2006), earning the title "Professor of Mathematics and Pedagogy".[2]
From 2014, she was the president of the environmental NGO Ecologists Without Borders (2014–2022), which focuses on connecting and socially activating people, as well as projects related to waste prevention, reduction, and reuse.[3] In the first two campaigns of Let's Clean Slovenia in 2010[4] and 2012,[5] which mobilized 14% of Slovenia’s population, Urša Zgojznik was the local coordinator for 212 municipalities and, in 2012, also the project leader. She also led the campaign Let’s Clean Slovenia 2018.[6][7] She led projects such as Eco-Concept, Zero Waste Tourism, and Don’t Throw Away Food!, among others.[8] She is actively engaged in the topic of food waste, sustainable tourism, implementing circular economy and Zero Waste concepts, as well as awareness-raising and environmental education in all areas.
In 2018, readers of the magazine Jana voted her Slovenian Woman of the Year,[9] and she was also nominated for Delo’s Person of the Year the same year.
In 2019, she headed the list "Let's Connect" in the European Parliament elections, supported by the European Green Party. The list brought together several non-parliamentary parties and civic movements to form a broad platform for connecting individuals and organizations.[10]
At the end of 2021, she co-founded Vesna with a group of like-minded individuals and became its co-president (alongside Uroš Macerl). The party is based on three main pillars: environment, democracy, and social justice. Zgojznik became one of the party’s leading figures upon its entry into Slovenian politics.[11]
In 2024, she ran as a candidate for Vesna in the 2024 European Parliament election in Slovenia.[12]
Public Engagement and Recognition
Zgojznik is recognized as one of the most prominent figures in Slovenian environmental activism. She has participated in various European environmental platforms and is often invited to speak on sustainability and civic engagement.
