The Institution of Zurich, also known as the Universitat Zürich in German, is a public research university that can be found in the Swiss city of Zürich. With almost 28,000 students now enrolled, it is by far Switzerland's most populous academic institution. It was established in 1833 when a new department of philosophy was added to the already existing colleges of theology, law, and medicine, which date all the way back to 1525.

At the moment, there are seven departments that make up the university's faculties. These are: Philosophy, Human Medicine, Economic Sciences, Law, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Theology, and Veterinary Medicine. The university has the most diverse selection of disciplines and courses available of any higher education establishment in Switzerland.

On April 29, 1833, the existing schools of theology, the Carolinum (which had been established by Huldrych Zwingli in 1525), law, and medicine were joined with a new faculty of Philosophy, which resulted in the establishment of the University of Zurich. It was the first university in Europe to be established by the state, as opposed to a monarch, a church, or any other religious institution.

The several campuses of the university are dispersed over the whole of Zürich. The city centre, Irchelpark, and Oerlikon are home to the main campuses of the university. University students, faculty, and staff have access to a number of libraries, including the ETH-library and the Zurich Central Library, which together have more than 5 million books. It was recommended in 1962 by the faculty of science to locate the Irchelpark campus on the Strickhofareal. 1973 saw the beginning of the first phase of the construction of the university buildings, and the year 1979 saw the official opening of the campus. Between the years 1978 and 1983, the second stage of building was ongoing. In addition, the site is home to the Anthropologisches Museum, which is a museum dedicated to anthropology, as well as the cantonal Staatsarchiv Zürich.
