Toledo, Ohio is home to the public research institution known as the University of Toledo (UToledo or UT for short). It is the campus in the University System of Ohio that is located the furthest to the north. In addition, the university manages a 450-acre (180 ha) Health Science campus in the West Toledo neighbourhood of Toledo, which is also home to the University of Toledo Medical Center; a 160-acre (65 ha) satellite campus in the Scott Park neighbourhood of Toledo; the Center for the Visual Arts can be found in downtown Toledo at the Toledo Museum of Art; and a research and education facility known as the Lake Erie Center can be found at Maumee Bay State Park.

The Toledo University of Arts and Trades was first established in 1872 in the central business district of Toledo, Ohio. It was subsequently handed over to the city of Toledo, which allowed it to reopen in 1884 as the Toledo Manual Training School. Over the course of the late 1800s, it evolved from a vocational school into a university after it closed its doors after just six years of operation. 1931 was the year that the institution made the relocation to its present campus in the Ottawa area. Since it was founded, the university has undergone both a physical expansion, which has resulted in the addition of more than one hundred major buildings covering a total area of more than one thousand four hundred and fifty acres (five hundred and seventy hectares), and an academic transformation, which has resulted in the establishment of a comprehensive research university that is well-known for its education in the areas of science, engineering, and medicine. It is categorised as an R2 university, which stands for "Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity." There are now approximately 100,000 surviving graduates of the University of Toledo, and the school maintains an enrolment of over 17,000 students. The institution is home to more than three hundred different student groups, and its sports teams, who go by the name Rockets, compete in the Mid-American Conference.
