University of Rochester Medical Center
The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), which is now known as UR Medicine, can be found in Rochester, New York. It is one of the core campuses of the University of Rochester and houses the primary facilities for patient care, research, and medical education.
It features a regional Prenatal Center, Trauma Center, Burn Center, Cancer Center, an Epilepsy Center, Psychiatric/Behavioral Health Emergency and treatment departments, Liver Transplant Center, and Cardiac Transplant Center. Additionally, it features a major AIDS Treatment Center as well as an NIH-designated AIDS Vaccine Evaluation Unit. Both the Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building and the Aab Institute of Biomedical Sciences are responsible for hosting a significant amount of the university's overall biomedical research activities.
In January of 2008, the University of Rochester made public a strategic plan with a budget of $500 million designed to facilitate growth in the areas of research and patient care. The proposal envisaged the creation of 1,800 new positions at the university, the addition of 123 beds to the hospital, the construction of a building for clinical and translational sciences, and the establishment of a new ambulatory surgical centre.
