It is referred to as the Institution of Miami (UM), Miami, UMiami, U of M, or The U by its students and faculty. The University of Miami is a private university situated in Coral Gables, Florida. The university had approximately 18,000 students enrolled in 12 colleges and schools as of 2020, including the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine in Miami's Health District, a law school on the main campus, and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science on Virginia Key, which is focused on the study of oceanography and atmospheric science and has research facilities at the Richmond Facility in southern Miami-Dade County.

The university provides 134 undergraduate, 148 master's, and 67 doctorate degree programmes, of which 63 are research/scholarship programmes and four are professional fields of study. The institution has a total enrollment of around 20,000 students. Student representatives from the institution have represented all 50 states as well as almost 150 other nations throughout the years. Miami-Dade College, with more than 16,000 full- and part-time instructors and employees, is among the top 10 employers in the county. The University of Miami's main campus in Coral Gables encompasses 239 acres and has more than 5.7 million square feet of structures.

The University of Michigan is categorised as "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity." The University of Michigan spent $358.9 million on research in fiscal year 2019. The University of Miami has a big library system with more than 3.9 million books with remarkable collections in Cuban history and music, among other things.

Student activities at UM include fraternities and sororities, as well as hundreds of other student clubs and organisations for students. The Miami Hurricane, the student newspaper, and WVUM, the student-run radio station, have both received several college honours and recognition. University of Miami's intercollegiate sports teams, collectively known as the Miami Hurricanes, play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I competition. Since 1983, the University of Miami football team has won five national championships, while the University of Miami baseball team has won four national titles since 1982.
