University of Lagos
The Institution of Lagos, sometimes referred to by its acronym UNILAG, is a public research university that was established in 1962 and is situated in Lagos, Nigeria. It is one of the first generation universities in Nigeria and is listed among the top institutions in the world in major education magazines. UNILAG is also one of the first universities in Africa. Currently, the institution maintains a presence in mainland Lagos through three separate campuses. Although it has two sites in Yaba (the main campus in Akoka and a newly established campus on the location that was formerly occupied by the school of radiography), the college of medicine is situated in the neighbourhood of Idi-Araba, which is in Surulere. The primary campus spans 802 acres and is located in a region that is mostly occupied by the Lagos lagoon. At the moment, more than 9,000 first-year students are accepted each year, and the total number of students enrolled at the university is over 57,000.
A visitation panel that was established to investigate the operations of the university between the years 2016 and 2020 found instances of financial mismanagement on the part of high-ranking administrators, and as a result, the university was ordered to terminate its relationships with commercial banks.
In 1962, two years after Nigeria gained its independence from Britain, UNILAG was established as a university. It was one of the first five universities to be established in the nation. He served in that capacity until 1965, when he was succeeded in that role by Saburi Biobaku. Saburi, however, was attacked by Kayode Adams, a student radical who claimed Biobaku's appointment was unjust and racially motivated. Adams was inspired to stab Saburi because of the controversy that surrounded Biobaku's nomination.
Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has served as the university's vice chancellor since 2017 and continues to do so now. According to a story published by the BBC in 2019, "female reporters were sexually harassed, propositioned, and placed under pressure by top instructors at the universities — all while wearing concealed cameras."
The university is responsible for the education of a significant number of notable alumni, including eminent scientists, politicians, lawyers, business icons, authors, entertainers, monarchs, countless technocrats. As of the beginning of September 2020, the University of Lagos can claim to have had one Nobel Prize winner and one Pulitzer Prize winner among its students, graduates, faculty members, or staff members.
