The Institution of Georgia, sometimes known simply as Georgia or UGA, is a public, land-grant research university with its main campus located in Athens, Georgia. Since it was established in 1785, it is considered to be one of the oldest public institutions in the United States. The University of Georgia, which serves as the system's flagship institution, has been placed among the top public institutions in the United States in a number of significant institutional rankings.

The university is categorised as having "more selective" undergraduate admissions, which is the most selective admissions category, and the ACT Assessment Student Report places UGA admissions in the "Highly Selective" category, which is the highest classification. Additionally, the university is categorised as being among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." The University of Georgia has been one of the top three public colleges in the United States in terms of the number of Rhodes Scholars that it has produced over the previous twenty years.

In addition to the major campuses that are located in Athens and include over 470 buildings, the university also has two minor campuses that are situated in the cities of Tifton and Griffin. The institution has additional campuses in the cities of Atlanta and Lawrenceville respectively. There are a total of 41,539 acres of university land spread throughout 30 counties in Georgia (168.10 km2).

Intercollegiate sports teams from the University of Georgia, most usually referred to by their team name, the Georgia Bulldogs, participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

The university is comprised of seventeen schools and colleges, with neither the terms "college" nor "school" serving to differentiate one from the other within the context of the institution. The University of Georgia/Medical College of Georgia Medical Partnership is located on the campus of the University of Georgia. This partnership not only offers extensive facilities for medically related education and research at the University of Georgia, but it also offers education leading to the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of Georgia. In addition to the colleges and schools, the University of Georgia is home to this partnership.
