The University of California, Santa Barbara, often known as UCSB, is a public land-grant research university located in Santa Barbara, California. In the academic year 2021–2022, there were 23,196 students enrolled in the undergraduate programme, and 2,983 students enrolled in the graduate programme. It is one of the ten universities that make up the University of California system. UCSB is the third-oldest undergraduate campus in the University of California system, behind UC Berkeley and UCLA. Its history can be traced back to 1891, when it was founded as an independent teachers' college. 

The University of California, Santa Barbara is comprised of three undergraduate colleges (the College of Letters and Science, the College of Engineering, and the College of Creative Studies), as well as two graduate schools (the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education and the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management), and it provides more than two hundred different degrees and programmes. UC Santa Barbara is located on a former Marine air station that was active during World War II. There are ten national research institutes located on the university's campus. Two of these facilities are the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Center for Control, Dynamical-Systems and Computation. At the University of California, Santa Barbara, there are several different organised research units (ORUs) that do study in fields such as evolutionary psychology, neurology, marine science, and more. According to the National Science Foundation, the University of California, Santa Barbara ranked one hundredth in the country in terms of the amount of money it spent on research and development for the fiscal year 2018. In 1995, UCSB was voted into the Association of American Universities after holding the position as the third most popular host on the ARPAnet.

There are now 34 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 39 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 27 members of the National Academy of Engineering, and six people who have won the Nobel Prize teaching at UCSB. In addition, there is one person who has won the Fields Medal. In addition to its status as a Public Ivy, the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is categorised as one of the "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" universities. In addition, the faculty includes winners of both the Academy Awards and the Emmy Awards, as well as recipients of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, the Millennium Technology Prize, the IEEE Medal of Honor, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, and the IEEE Medal of Honor.
