The Université de Montréal is a public research university in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, that offers courses in both French and English. The main campus of McGill University is situated on the northern slope of Mount Royal, in the districts of Outremont and Côte-des-Neiges, on the northern slope of Mount Royal. The university is made up of thirteen faculties, more than sixty departments, and two associated schools: the Polytechnique Montréal (School of Engineering; previously known as the École Polytechnique de Montréal) and the HEC Montréal (Hotel and Restaurant Management School) (School of Business). Over 650 undergraduate and graduate programmes, including 71 doctorate programmes, are available at the university.

In 1878, the institution was established as a satellite campus of the Université Laval in Montreal, Quebec. After receiving a papal charter in 1919 and a provincial charter in 1920, it was able to establish itself as an autonomous organisation. In 1942, the University of Montréal relocated from its previous site in Montreal's Quartier Latin to its current location on Mount Royal. With the passage of a new provincial charter in 1967, it was elevated to the status of a secular institution.
