Uncloseted Media is a nonprofit and independent news organization based in New York City. It was founded in 2024 by editor in chief and former 60 Minutes+ and The Wall Street Journal journalist Spencer Macnaughton.[1] [2]
Overview
Uncloseted Media is a U.S.-based, non-partisan LGBTQ-focused news publication[3] founded in 2024 by Spencer Macnaughton.
Uncloseted Media does investigative reporting on LGBTQ issues in the U.S. and globally.[4] The publication covers topics such as anti-LGBTQ legislation, healthcare access,[5]religious trauma,[6] issues affecting queer youth,[7] and challenges faced by the transgender community.[8]
History
Uncloseted Media officially launched on September 3, 2024.[9] Macnaughton founded the outlet in response to a perceived lack of investigative LGBTQ journalism, particularly into the funding and influence behind anti-LGBTQ groups.[10][4]
Uncloseted Media operates under the fiscal sponsorship of the nonprofit Resource Impact. [11] The outlet launched with nearly $500,000 in pledged donations, with major donors including Gaingels co-founder Paul Grossinger and philanthropist Paul Austin of the P. Austin Family Foundation.[4]
The organization launched with author and journalist Charles Kaiser as managing editor,[4] though its website no longer lists him on the masthead.[12]
In October 2024, Uncloseted Media entered into a partnership with UK-based LGBTQ magazine GAY TIMES,[13] which led to several of Uncloseted Media’s articles being republished by GAY TIMES.[14] The outlet has also collaborated with other publications on individual stories, including the Chicago Sun‑Times,[15] the The Idaho Statesman,[16] Fierce Healthcare,[17] The Nation,[18] and Votebeat.[19]
Organization
Uncloseted Media's advisory board includes LGBTQ leaders and media veterans such as Jackson Block, CEO of LGBT+ VC,[20] Alan Fippen, a former editor at The New York Times,[21] and Tariro Mzezewa, host of PBS's Peak Travel.[22]
According to the organization, Uncloseted Media operates through a funding model that combines philanthropic contributions and subscription revenue, with a stated aim of maintaining editorial independence. The company’s website notes plans to expand its staff and editorial coverage.[23]
Awards
In April 2025, investigative journalist Sam Donndelinger of Uncloseted Media and reporter Anastassia Gliadkovskaya of Fierce Healthcare won the Azbee Regional Silver Award in the Impact/Investigative category for their article on PrEP deserts in the American South.[24] The same article also received a National Institute for Health Care Management Award and was a finalist for the 2025 Neal Award for Best Single Article in March 2025.[25]
Another article from Uncloseted Media, on trans men and eating disorders, won the Excellence in Health or Fitness Coverage Award of the National Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists.[26]
