Unanimo Deportes is a multi-platform Spanish language sports media brand including a full-time international radio network that began airing on radio stations in various U.S. markets in 2019. It is owned by Unanimo Sports Media, LLC. The company was founded by the former ESPN Deportes founding General Manager, who earlier launched that service for The Walt Disney Company's ESPN.[1] Unanimo Deportes currently produces podcasts, a sports news and information website, a mobile app, has a social media presence, publishes newsletters, delivers streaming audio, streaming video and online video.
History
The concept for Unanimo Deportes was created in late 2018, planned as an online sports portal to serve U.S. Hispanic sports fans in Spanish. The brand’s first appearance was on social media for a bout featuring Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez - Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs Rocky Fielding[2] on December 15, 2018. Prior to Unanimo Deportes’ planned July 2019 launch for its website, ESPN announced that it was shuttering ESPN Deportes Radio[3] with an end date of September 8, 2019. It was decided the staff there would be recruited and Unanimo would include a radio network in addition to the sports web portal. The plan was to be operational with Unanimo Deportes Radio at the moment ESPN Deportes Radio ceased operations to provide continuity for affiliated radio stations. This provided less than a 90-day window between the closure announcement made on June 20th, 2019, and the intended new network start date.
The Unanimodeportes.com portal was launched in July 2019. Unanimo Deportes Radio then launched on September 9th 2019, to replace ESPN Deportes Radio which went off the air permanently midnight the previous day[4]. Unanimo launched on several of ESPNs former affiliated stations, and employed many of the same on-air hosts that were on ESPN.
Shortly after launch, the Covid-19 pandemic hit, bringing practically all sports activities globally to a halt. According to Diario Las Americas[5], Unanimo sports coverage continued nonetheless - "sports is not dead".
Unanimo Deportes is available via digital audio streaming platforms including iHeart Radio, TuneIn Radio, and Audacy and others, covering the U.S., and international markets. It is also available as a video streaming CTV channel.
