Ulrich Kampffmeyer (born April 12, 1952 in Hameln, Germany) is a German business consultant, author, archaeologist, and Information Scientist. He is regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the field of information management in Europe, with a particular focus on digital archiving, document management, enterprise content management and the application of artificial intelligence in information systems.[1][2][3][4][5]

Education and Early Career

Kampffmeyer studied Pre- and Protohistory and Near Eastern archaeology at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen, where he obtained his Magister Artium in 1978[6] and received his PhD (Dr. phil.) in 1988[7]. He also pursued studies in computer science and soil science at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, graduating in 1982 as a diplom prehistorian (Dipl. Prähist.)[8] and later the Master in Information Technology (MIT)[9][10]. His early career involved research and teaching in archaeological methodology, where he focused on the application of information technology in archaeological research.[11][12]

Professional Development

In 1992, Kampffmeyer founded the consulting company PROJECT CONSULT GmbH in Hamburg, which specializes in document management, electronic archiving, and Enterprise content management (ECM)[13]). He has held leading positions within international organizations such as the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM)[14] and the DLM Forum[15] of the European Commission, contributing to the development of standards such as MoReq2 for Records management.[16]

Contributions to Information Management

Kampffmeyer introduced the concept of 'revisionssichere Archivierung' (audit-proof archiving) in 1992, which has since become a standard for the legal and technical requirements of Digital archiving systems in Germany and Europe[17]. In his work 'Dokumenten-Technologien: Wohin geht die Reise?' (2003)[18], he analyzed the evolution of document management in the context of technological advancements and compliance requirements. His tri-lingual publication 'ECM Enterprise Content Management' (2006)[19] is considered a fundamental work in the ECM field. Additionally, he later co-developed the concept of Intelligent Information Management (IIM), which describes the integration of artificial intelligence into information management and process management[20].
