Tushar Ballov (Bengali: তুষার বল্লভ), (Born 2nd December, 1976) is a Bengali Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer.

Biography

Early life

Tushar Ballov was born to a peasant family in Monoharpur Village, Paschim Medinipur district, on 2nd December 1976. In his early years, he had a keen interest in films, which has grown into a deep passion. Because of this passion, he pulled himself out of the traditional education system and went to Kolkata. In an alien city, he took a job as a cook at a factory, which provided him with food and accommodation. He also joined a theatre group to get closer to the film world. He struggled for eight long years and, eventually, managed to become an Assistant Director and then worked for a couple of years under a Director. It was during that time that he learned the art of filmmaking. As a result of these experiences he was able to direct two short films - Jonaki (The Firefly) and Abela (The Late Afternoon), one after the other. Both films were well received by audiences. The response he got provided him with the confidence he needed to take the plunge and fulfill his dream. The result was his first feature film, Baki Itihas (The Unfinished Manuscript).

Films

The Bengali-language film Baki Itihas, known as The Unfinished Manuscript in English, was Tushar Ballov's first feature film, which received great acclaim from Bengali audiences. As part of the 25th Kolkata International Film Festival, 2019, the film had its world premiere in Kolkata. The film was later screened at Asian Film Festival, Los Angeles, Orlando International Film Festival, Neo-South Independent Film Festival, Malaysia, and 6th Dehradun International Film Festival, India.

A commercial release of this film took place on February 25th, 2022, at Nandan (Kolkata) and received encouraging reviews from the general public.

Demokkacy, The Republic of Dead Wings is the second film by Tushar Ballov. The plot revolves around marginalized people and their fateful journey in a hostile socio-political environment, which can seem ridiculous at times. 'DEMOKKACY,' an odd emphasis on the word 'democracy,' refers to the nature and rawness of the political system.

Demokkacy has been selected as a finalist at the Aporia International Village Film Festival, 2022 in South Korea.

Influence and Style

The films of Satyajit Ray had a profound impact on Tushar in his early days that gave rise to his interest in film making. He has decided to develop his own style of filmmaking rather than copying that of the Auteur.

As a filmmaker, Tushar Ballov has a unique style. Its independent filmmaking style and artistic vision distinguish it from the dominant film industry. Filmed in real locations with sync sound, it maintains a certain level of rawness that the subject demands. His film was made possible by the passion, enthusiasm, and hard work of a relatively inexperienced team of technicians and artists.
