The Turkish people, often known as Turks (Turkic: Türkler), are a Turkic people who represent the majority of the population in Turkey as well as Northern Cyprus. They speak numerous varieties of the Turkish language. In addition, there are still ethnic Turkish populations that date back hundreds of years in many of the lands that once belonged to the Ottoman Empire. "Everyone who is tied to the Turkish state by the bond of citizenship" is how Article 66 of the Turkish Constitution defines a "Turk." Notwithstanding the fact that the ethnic meaning of the word "Turkish" is not the same as the legal definition of the term "Turkish" as it applies to a citizen of Turkey, the majority of the Turkish people (estimated to be between 70 and 75 percent) is of Turkish ethnicity. The majority of Turks are devout Muslims who follow either the Sunni or Alevi school of Islam.
