The Turkish Young Academy (Turkish: TÜBA Genç Akademi) is an organization of early and mid-career scientists and scholars in Turkey. Established in 2019, it operates as part of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA)[1]. It aims to promote scientific research and interdisciplinary collaboration among younger academics.
History
The Turkish Young Academy was established by the TÜBA Academy Council on 30 November 2019.[1] Its founding was connected to TÜBA's prior support for early-career researchers through programs such as the Outstanding Young Scientists Awards Program (GEBİP), which was established in 2001.[2]
The academy's charter was adopted in October 2022, establishing its organizational structure and membership criteria.[3] Public activities began in 2025 following organizational preparations.
Organization
The academy is governed by a Governing Board responsible for coordinating activities, and a General Assembly comprising all members.[4] The Governing Board was first appointed by the TÜBA Academy Council in November 2025.[5] Members are organized into three fields: Natural and Engineering Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Health and Life Sciences.[6]
Membership
Membership is primarily granted to recipients of the TÜBA-GEBİP award. Additional pathways include nomination by TÜBA members or receipt of comparable awards such as the TÜBİTAK Incentive Award or TÜSEB Aziz Sancar Incentive Award.[7] [8] Candidates are evaluated by the TÜBA Academy Council before submission to the General Assembly for final approval.
Membership is generally limited to researchers under 45 years of age.
Activities
The academy organizes meetings, working groups, and academic events to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration.[9] Funding is provided through TÜBA's budget for collective activities such as conferences, workshops, and publications, rather than individual research grants.
The academy participates in international networks and platforms involving young academies and scientific organizations.[10][11][12][13]
