Tuli Mekondjo

Tuli Mekondjo is a Namibian born artist, who was born in 1982.[1][2] She was born in a refugee camp in Angola during the Namibian Angolan Border War.[3] She lives and work in Windhoek.[4]

Education

Mekondjo completed her high school in Swakopmund, Namibia.[5] Later she self-taught herself in visual arts.

Career

Mekondjo is a visual artist and a teacher. Mekondjo is passionate in designing, drawing, painting and playing dramas. Mekondjo is also a budding fashion designer and amateur jewellery-maker.[5]

Performances

Mekondjo first solo exhibition titled 'The Bellowing Mind' was held at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre in August 2016.[5]

Amongst her many displays, Mekondjo displayed 'Lepubric of Tackiness' at Orumbonde books in 2018. The display showcased cringe-worthy personal ads, media mimicking shebeens and cuca shops and familiar taxi situations.[6]

During 10 September to 08 October 2022, Mekondjo showcased her reimagining of Namibia's colonial archives titled 'Oudjuu wo makipa etu/ The burdens of our bones', a North American solo debut that was on display at Hales.

Award Received

Mekondjo is the recipient of the prestigious DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program in 2022 currently.
