Trygve Ugland (born 1969)[1] is a Canadian and Norwegian political scientist, university administrator and professor.[2]

Ugland was educated at the University of Oslo and Queen’s University of Belfast, and he earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Oslo in 2002 under the supervision of Johan P. Olsen.[3]

Ugland has worked at Bishop's University since 2003. At Bishop’s University, he served as Secretary General and Vice-Principal of Government Relations and Planning between 2017 and 2022, [4] and he has completed three terms as Chair of the Department of Politics and International Studies.[5] Ugland has also held visiting researcher appointments at the Université de Montréal and the University of Copenhagen.

Ugland’s research and teaching are located within the study of European and Scandinavian politics, with a particular focus on transatlantic relations. His recent books include Jean Monnet and Canada: Early Travels and the Idea of European Unity and Policy Learning from Canada: Reforming Scandinavian Immigration and Integration Policies, both published by the University of Toronto Press.

Jean Monnet and Canada: Early Travels and the Idea of European Unity recounts the story of Jean Monnet (1888–1979), widely regarded as the chief architect of the European Coal and Steel Community, the precursor to today’s European Union. It examines his formative years in Canada, where he worked as an agent for his father’s cognac business, promoting Monnet cognac. The book advances the argument that the extensive period of time Monnet spent in Canada between 1907 and 1914 had a formative influence on the achievements of his later years, particularly on the institutional 'construction of Europe', and it has been reviewed in Literary Review of Canada,[6] Journal of Common Market Studies,[7] Baltic Journal of Political Science,[8] Canadian Journal of Political Science, [9] The European Legacy,[10] H-France Review [11] and International Journal. [12]

His forthcoming book, Politics of Adaptability: The Nordic Model and North America, will be published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2027.

Ugland has served as Vice-President of the Association for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada (AASSC) since 2024.[13]
