Trevor Ohlsen (born August 9, 1995) is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, pianist, record producer, and podcaster. In 2014 he attended McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minnesota as a guitar performance major, before dropping out after only one year to pursue a career in the music industry. January 2019 saw Ohlsen release his self-titled album Trevor Ohlsen,[1] which led to millions of plays on dozens of Playlist on YouTube. The success of Ohlsen's release led to a Southern tour across multiple states, the acquisition of fans across the country, and a wealth of creative opportunities. Ohlsen announced in 2020 that his new album was being put together and expected for release in 2021. He's since announced the name of the album: These are my Memories.

Early life

Ohlsen was born and raised in Iron Mountain, Michigan. His father, Scott, owns The Music Tree,[2] a popular music store in town since 1985, while his mother, Diane, has spent her career as a nurse at DCHS.[3] He also has two older sisters, Erin and Alexandra, who work in the food-service industry.

Ohlsen grew up in a very musical environment. His father Scott was in Miles Sparks, a rock and roll group for over ten years in the 1980s. At the age of ten, Trevor asked his mother if he could start taking piano lessons; he began playing electric guitar the same year. Ohlsen attended Kingsford High School[4] where he was very active in both concert band as a tenor saxophone player, jazz band as a bass player, and choir as a 'tenor' section leader. Ohlsen wrote his first song at the age of 10, but consistently began writing songs at the age of 14, quickly building his reputation as ‘the music kid[5]’ around the area.

Career beginnings

Ohlsen began recording music in his bedroom in 2009, however his first publicly released track "Doing Something Right" didn’t come out until December 30, 2011. For the next four years, Ohlsen released in succession multiple singles, along with two complete albums. Ohlsen has since removed these early tracks from being online, however still credits them as some of his first steps in the right direction. Ohlsen recorded every instrument on each project, recording everything on a Tascam DP-02 eight track recording system.

St. Paul/Minneapolis years

After graduating from Kingsford High School in 2014,[4] Ohlsen moved in with his aunt and uncle in River Falls, Wisconsin to attend McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minnesota. When he wasn’t attending classes, Ohlsen spent most of his time playing open mics and doing showcases throughout the cities. He also became friends with J.S. Ondara, who at the time was also a persistent open mic performer in the area. His most memorable performance[6][7] was with Youtuber Tyler Ward at 7th Street Entry, an "inspiring" night from which Ohlsen says "gave me a little taste of what's to come in the future". Ohlsen also wrote and recorded To The Top at McNally Smith College of Music, a five track Extended play which came out February 11, 2016.

Move back home

After a year of open mics, working at his aunt's embroidery shop, and no longer attending McNally, Ohlsen moved back home in 2016 to focus on writing and find a sense of direction. Signing up for Upper Peninsula of Michigan|Upper Michigan’s '906 Got Talent', a talent competition of singers, comedians, and other acts, Ohlsen came in 2nd out of 50, leaving him with a $1,500 prize and more opportunities. He also released "Michigan"[8] one of his most popular tracks, which receives a considerable amount of radio play throughout Michigan.

Loss of friend to suicide

Ohlsen opening for Everclear (band)[9] in 2019 In June of 2018, one of Ohlsen’s best friends, Jake Tousignant,[10] suicide. Ohlsen grew up playing music with Tousignant, who at the time was going by the stage name Jake Allan.

"We shared the same dream of doing music for a living. He was the best songwriter and drummer I’d known. Even more importantly, he was a great person and friend. I wish he was still around."

Around the same time Ohlsen was going through a break up.

"It was really quite a difficult time. More so than I’d ever experienced before."

However, this time of adversity led to his lead single "All Over Again",[11] off his 2019 album Trevor Ohlsen,[1] getting over a million plays on AlexRainBird’s YouTube Channel, and dozens of other channels online.

Influences

Ohlsen grew up listening to country music, however he states that John Mayer was his biggest influence. One of Ohlsen’s favorite albums, Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles, played a significant role in Ohlsen deciding to do music for a living. Ed Sheeran has also had a significant influence on Ohlsen, along with more recently pop artist Lauv.

Endeavors

Ohlsen opened for The Verve Pipe and Everclear (band)[9] at The Land Of Illusion Theme Park in Middletown, Ohio on July 20th, 2019. He’s also begun working with Tarja Turunen bass player Kevin Chown of Escanaba, MI. The two performed at Camp Harstad,[12] a summer camp for special needs kids for their end of the year celebration.

Podcast

In September 2020, Ohlsen started a twice weekly podcast called The Trevor Ohlsen Show, airing Wednesdays and Saturdays. From comedy, to introspective thinking, to potential concepts worth implementing, the conversational spectrum is described as wide open when it comes to what is discussed on the show.

These are my Memories

Ohlsen's latest work involves putting together his 2021 album These are my Memories, a ten-track pop/dance album. Taking advantage of the newfound time that the pandemic brought about for so many, Ohlsen spent 2020 piecing the album together in his home studio in Michigan. "I’ve got a Girlfriend, but I like you" is one of the lead singles off this upcoming record.

Collaborations

Ohlsen recently collaborated with Dutch people Electronic dance music Koen Fagen and Mexican based producer Harold Marin on their most recent release "Vulnerable". The track was picked up by independent record label, Frequency Music[13] in Amsterdam.
