Trevor Lawrence Jr. (born February 17, 1974) is an American drummer, record producer, and songwriter with a 34-year career in the music industry. He is the co-designer of the Istanbul Agop "Clapstack" percussion instrument.[1] He has contributed as a producer, writer, and drummer to multiple commercially successful recordings.[2]

Life and career

Lawrence was born into a musical family in Los Angeles. He is the son of saxophonist Trevor Lawrence Sr. and singer Lynda Laurence, formerly of The Supremes. He is the grandson of Ira B. Tucker of the gospel group The Dixie Hummingbirds. He attended the California Institute of the Arts and the University of Southern California.[3]

Lawrence's early career involved extensive session work and touring. He has a long-standing professional association with Dr. Dre, contributing as a producer, composer, and drummer to the 2015 album Compton.[4] Lawrence has also worked closely with Eminem, serving as a producer and keyboardist on the album Relapse (2009), and contributing to Recovery (2010) and Music to Be Murdered By (2020).[2]

As a session musician and songwriter, Lawrence has performed or recorded with artists including Alicia Keys (Girl on Fire), Bruno Mars (24K Magic), Ed Sheeran, and Lizzo.[5] In 2022, Lawrence performed as part of the ensemble for the Super Bowl LVI halftime show alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar.[6] He has also toured extensively as a drummer for jazz musician Herbie Hancock.[7]

In addition to performance, Lawrence co-designed the "Clapstack" with Istanbul Agop Cymbals, an acoustic instrument developed to replicate analog handclap samples.[1] He also serves as a guest lecturer at California State University, Northridge.
