Toyin Akinniyi (born 23 April 1981) is a Nigerian Executive, serving as Vice President, Africa at Luminate Group, a global Philanthropic organisation supporting civic innovation and accountability.[1][2][3][4][5]
Early life and education
Toyin Akinniyi was born in Ikeja, Lagos state Nigeria on 23 April 1981. She attended GT Nursery and Primary School, Surulere, Ajelogo Primary School, Ketu, and completed her Primary Education at St. Matthias Primary School in Ibadan.[2][3]. She completed secondary school at Abadina College, within the University of Ibadan campus, in 1997[3][2]
Akiniyi holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 2004 and a Master's of Arts degree in Peace and Conflict Studies in 2008 from the University of Ibadan[4][3][6]. She also holds a professional certificate in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Oxford, an Impact Investing Certificate from the University of Cape Town, Reversing the Resource Curse: Policy and Practice from the Central European University, a Communication for Development certificate from the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication, and a Journalism certificate from the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.[2][3]
Career
Akinniyi began her career in education as a Literature instructor at the Polytechnic, Ibadan[4]. She worked with the Natural Resource Government Institute (NRGI) as a Communication and Advocacy officer for Anglophone Africa[7]. She also worked with the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism to strengthen investigative journalism in Nigeria[4]. She joined Luminate Group in 2020 and was appointed vice president, Africa in 2023[3][7]
Fellowship and notable works
Akinniyi is a fellow of Stanford Draper Hills 2021[2][4][7]. She authored an essay in the book titled: "Remaking Nigeria: Sixty Years, Sixty Voices" in commemoration of Nigeria's 60th independence in 2020, and also authored a chapter in "African Muckraking: 75 Years of Investigative Journalism from Africa", HerStory: Taking Root of Sparking Change.[6]
Personal life
Akinniyi is married with two children and many nieces and nephews. She is also involved in mentorship initiatives supporting women in leadership and emerging civic innovators across Africa.[4][3]
