Torpor, stylised as TORPOR, are a British Post-metal / Sludge metal formed in London, UK in 2012. Founded by guitarist Jonathan Taylor, bassist Lauren Moysey Mason and drummer Simon Mason.

History

Torpor formed when Jonathan Taylor, Lauren Mason and Simon Mason joined forces in February 2012. Later adding Nats Spada to the line-up as lead vocalist in April 2012.

In the preceding years before the release of their debut album they played various dates in the UK with bands such as Slab Dragger[1], BAST, Black Moth, Årabrot, Opium Lord[2] and Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster.

They released their debut album, From Nothing, Comes Everything, three years later in February, 2015 on Head of Crom Records [1], and was widely well received[2][3][4] as well as gaining airplay of their single "Surrender to the Light" on the BBC Radio 1 rock show hosted by Daniel P. Carter. The album was officially released on the 9 February 2015 and a full album stream was made available to listen to via the Terrorizer Magazine website. The album features artwork by Nick Steinhardt of Touché Amoré.

Torpor went on to support the release of this album in 2015 and joined line ups with Conan (band), Primitive Man (band), Sea Bastard, Ithaca, Caina, Plebian Grandstand and Sonance. However, In August of 2015 Nats Spada left the band.

The remaining members went on to support Amenra at Heaven (nightclub) along with Bossk (band) and Talons (band) on 8 November 2015 and continued the support of their first album through a European tour later that month with avant-Hardcore punk band, Human Future.[5]

This tour gave the remaining members the chance to air tracks that were later released as a split 12" with the notable and much lauded[6] Bristol doom/post-metal band Sonance [3] seeing a release through Truthseeker Music on 12 February 2016.

After 3 years of writing Torpor released their second full length album, Rhetoric of the Image in September 2019 and again was broadly very well received by international press [7][8][9][10][11]. The single, "Benign Circle", premiered on CVLT Nation,[12] with the full album airing on Invisible Oranges.[13] However, world events halted the bands ability to tour. The album was released by a cooperative of five labels Truthseeker Music (UK), Sludge Lord Records (UK), Moment of Collapse (GER), Smiths Food Group (NED) and Medusa Crush Recordings (CAN).

Musical Style

Torpor's initial sound was a mixture of Sludge metal and Hardcore punk which is reflected in their debut album, and was mainly attributed to the vocal style that Nats Spada provided. After the departure of Nats Spada in August 2015 the band explored their post-metal and doom influences as well as experimentation with synthesisers, noise elements and ambient soundscapes. Finally settling on their current downcast post-metal / doom sound.[14]
