OccupationSexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) expert

Tore Holte Follestad is a Norwegian sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) expert. He is a recognised public health authority in his home country. Being highly active in his field, Follestad is an advocate for comprehensive sex education across the Norwegian school system[1][2][3] and the provision of more readily available sexual health services for adolescents.[4][5] He works as a clinical sexologist, and is the assistant general manager, at the Sex and Society (Norwegian: Sex og Samfunn) clinic in Oslo,[6] with prior experience in clinical and school-based nursing, health consultancy, and health education programmes. He is head of the Norwegian Society for Clinical Sexology (Norwegian: Norsk Forening for Klinisk Sexologi (NFKS)); a position he has held since 2019.[7][8]

Early life

Follestad was born in 1969 in Follestadallen, Møre og Romsdal County, Norway. He spent his childhood at his parents’ residence in Sunnmøre. Whilst attending high school, Follestad was a member of the Norwegian Young Christian Democrats, the youth wing of the country’s Christian Democratic Party.

Education

Follestad relocated to Oslo in 1990, in order to pursue a diploma in political science. He studied at the University of Oslo from 1991-1992.

In 1999, he attended the VID Specialized University in Oslo to attain a professional nursing qualification.

Follestad completed his studies of clinical sexology in 2007 at the University of Agder (formerly Agder University College).

Career and current work

Aside from his work as a counsellor and professional sexologist, Follestad is involved with various initiatives, collaborating with public health stakeholders. He is a former leader of Norway’s National Association for Lesbian and Gay Liberation (since renamed to the National Association for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender People),[9][10]and chairman of ‘Stiftelsen Tryggere’, an organisation which works to prevent sexual abuse and violence in relationships.[11]

Follestad is particularly concerned with issues that today’s young people face with regards to their sexuality. He has appeared on daytime television show God Morgen Norge ('Good Morning Norway'), to discuss the pressures felt by young women to conform to a particular standard of intimate attractiveness,[12] and shared his opinions in several articles on similar issues affecting young men in terms of perceived sexual performance.[13][14]

In addition, Follestad is involved in the presentation of lectures and seminars related to his field.[15] He contributes to various online publications such as Møre-Nytt[16] and the articles section of the NRK website.[17]

Personal life

Follestad’s hobbies include reading, writing, and visiting the Norwegian countryside with friends and family. During the summers, he often vacations in Portugal and Spain.
