He served as the Party Secretary of East China Normal University (ECNU) from 2011 to 2019, while also teaching philosophy at the university[2]. Before that he was the Vice Secretary at Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) from 2004 to 2011 and then also as the Director of its Institute of Philosophy from 2009 to 2011[2].

Early life and education

Tong spent the first six years of his life in a village of Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province[3]. Then his family moved to Shanghai, where he went to elementary and middle schools[3]. After he graduated, Tong worked at a farm in Chongming Island, an alluvial island at the mouth of the Yangtze River in Eastern China[2]. When the Chinese National College Entrance Examination resumed in late 1977 after the Cultural Revolution, Tong attended ECNU to study philosophy in 1978 and received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in 1982 and 1984 respectively[2]. In 1988, Tong traveled to the University of Bergen in Norway as a visiting scholar and ultimately earned a PhD in philosophy from the university in 1994[2]. In 2000, Tong spent a year at Columbia University in New York City as a Fulbright Scholar[3].

Tong taught at the Philosophy Department of ECNU since 1984[3]. After graduating from the University of Bergen, Tong returned to ECNU and served as the Dean of Philosophy Department from 1995 to 1998[3]. He’s also appointed as the Deputy Dean at the School of Humanities from 1997 to 2000[3]. Tong left his teaching and administrative position at ECNU in 2004 to take the Vice Secretary position at the SASS[3]. He then led its Institute of Philosophy from 2009 to 2011. Tong returned to ECNU in 2011 and became the Party Secretary of the university until 2019[3].
