Tomer Cohen is an Israeli-American jazz guitarist and composer.

Biography

Tomer Cohen (born October 15, 1996)[1] is a jazz guitarist and composer. He was born in Berkeley, California, but was raised in the small village of Kibbutz Gal'ed in Israel.[2]

At the age of thirteen, Cohen began learning to play the guitar from a teacher in his kibbutz and soon after received his first classical guitar. After a year of studying, he switched to an electric guitar. In 2012, Cohen enrolled in a musical high school program and studied for three years. Additionally, he studied with two private teachers, one for guitar and one for theory and composition.[2]

After graduating high school in 2014, Cohen joined the Israeli army as a computer administrator. During his time in the army, he studied for two years in the Center of Jazz Studies at the Israel Music Conservatory in Tel Aviv. While in the program, Cohen also taught in two conservatories and played gigs around the country, both as a sideman and as a bandleader.

After completing his three-year mandatory service in the army, Cohen was accepted into a four-year program between the Israel Music Conservatory and The New School in New York City to obtain his first BFA degree in Jazz performance. He left his kibbutz and moved to Tel Aviv to start his studies in the Jazz program at the Israel Music Conservatory. After two years, he was granted a scholarship from The New School to complete his last two years of the degree in New York.[3] In May 2021, Cohen graduated with honors from The New School. In December 2021, he released his debut album, "Not the Same River", with drummer Obed Calvaire and bassist Matt Penman. The album showcases Cohen's diverse influences, including Middle Eastern, jazz from the NYC scene, folk, and rock. It was released by Hypnote Records, a European-based label located in Brussels, Belgium.[4]
