Tobias Koch (born1986, Basel) is a Swiss composer, sound artist and sound designer. His work spans across various disciplines, including performing arts, film, experimental music, sound art and visual arts.

Work

Koch has composed scores for notable works in performing arts, dance, and theater, presented at renowned institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York..[1][2], documenta 14[3], Frieze Art Fair[4], Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Volksbühne in Berlin and the Venice Biennale[5].

Koch's composition was featured in Alexandra Bachzetsis's performance and installation work "Massacre: Variations on a Theme," presented at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. In a review of the performance, The New York Times praised Koch's score for its "volcanic composition clearly based on 'The Rite of Spring,'" noting how the "physicality of the music and how it’s produced give urgency and direction to the choreography."[6]

Tobias Koch also composed music for and collaborated with a diverse range of pop music artists, including Canadian singer and songwriter Cecile Believe, Swiss-Tibetan singer-songwriter Yesh, and Swiss-Brazilian multidisciplinary artist PRICE (Mathias Ringgenberg)[7]

Film

His sound design and musical compositions have been featured in award-winning films such as A Piece of Sky (2022 film), Nothing but the Sun, and Above And Below, showcased at major film festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival[8], Locarno Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, and the Toronto International Film Festival.

His score for the feature film Drii Winter (A Piece of Sky (2022 film), for which he collaborated with composer Jannik Giger has won the Georges Delerue Award for Best Music at Film Fest Gent[9], and was also Switzerland’s official submission for the 95th Academy Awards[10][11]. Koch's work on the film was further nominated for Best Score, as well as Best Sound at the Swiss Film Awards 2023.

Solo practice

In addition to his collaborations with various artists and directors, Tobias Koch has developed a distinctive solo practice in recent years, which merges sound art, performance, and visual elements. His work has been exhibited and performed at numerous venues and festivals throughout Europe, such as the Unsound Festival.[12], Biennale Son[13], or Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome[14]

Music journalist Philip Sherburne described Tobias Koch’s performance at Unsound Festival 2023 as "by far the best of the interventions" during the night. Sherburne noted "Weaving through a crowd seated on the floor in front of the stage, Swiss artist Tobias Koch slowly rotated a parabolic mic overhead, generating throbbing feedback from the resonance of the room," before seamlessly transitioning into "the strangest rendition of Roy Orbison’s 'In Dreams'—famously used in Blue Velvet—that I’ve ever seen."[15]
