Timothy Robert Bradley Johnson (born January 13, 1950) is an obstetrician-gynecologist, researcher, and educator in the sub-specialty of maternal-fetal medicine. He is recognized for significant contributions in the areas of fetal assessment and behavior (1,2); prenatal care; sexual harassment in academic medicine (3,4); global women’s health, health equity and ethics (5).

Career

Timothy Johnson received his education and training at the University of Michigan, University of Virginia, and Johns Hopkins University (6). After service in the US Air Force, he rejoined the Johns Hopkins faculty to eventually become director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and chief of obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He served as chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Michigan from 1993 to 2017. He is Bates Professor of the Diseases of Women and Children emeritus, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor emeritus, and professor emeritus of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s & Gender Studies at Michigan. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. While he was chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan, the department’s national rankings in obstetrics and gynecology and women’s health reached well into the “top ten” by National Institutes of Health (NIH) and US News & World Report metrics.

Global Health

Doctor Johnson is active in international teaching and training, especially in Ghana (7) where he was instrumental in starting in-country OBGYN training and other successful training programs. He is an honorary fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, honorary fellow of the Ghana College of Surgeons, and honorary fellow of the International College of Surgeons. He is past editor of the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the official journal of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).

Honors

Johnson was elected to the US National Academy of Medicine in 2003. He received the President’s Award for Distinguished Service in International Education in 2022 from the University of Michigan; the Distinguished Service Award of ACOG; the Distinguished Merit Award of FIGO; and two honorary doctorates. He has received numerous honors for his teaching and is past president of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
